Hear The Bill
We Read...You Listen...We ALL Decide
Meet Roger Baker
The voice over community is just that -- a true community, and one filled with genuine warmth and support for one another.

We have enjoyed getting to know some wonderfully talented and generous souls during the making of this project. We thought you might like getting acquainted with them as well.

Roger’s been with us from the very beginning, putting in many long hours, and taking on a leadership role, assuring that all audio is quality checked for accuracy and best quality for our listeners. He has taken on extra pages to read, audio to edit, interviews to give, and emails to write. He is a valuable resource. We love his positive, upbeat nature – and the fact that he not only wants to do so much for the project, but that he can, and does it so well.

How long have you been doing voice over work? Full or part time?

I have been doing voice over work part time and I am just starting my fourth year of seriously pursuing it. I have been doing it off and on for about 6 years now, through radio and other avenues, but now I have been really working toward doing more of it. At some point I would like to do this as much as possible full time since it is a lot of fun!

What is your most memorable VO moment?

I think my most memorable moment in VO was when I began producing an entire 90 minute radio program for a local church, where I had to record it, edit, narrate, process, and have it ready to air each week. And I didn’t know a whole lot about it at the time. I was just sort of asked to do it. I had always wanted to do radio and voice work, and with this, I finally got the chance to do it. The first time I heard the show on the radio was a really exciting moment I have to admit. Then I began to see what it really took to make it work. And with that, I ended up getting an education really quickly! Sometimes I really miss doing that one.?

What other types of volunteer work have you done?

I have done a lot of volunteer work in the past that has been related to voice over. Currently I am volunteering at a local radio station that plays Christian rock. I do the afternoon show for them plus other types of audio such as PSA’s and announcements and such. I also volunteer for AIRS-LA which is a reading service for the blind in Los Angeles. I produce the weekly Health podcast for their “Daily Airs” section. In the past I have also been involved with “The News from the WWW” which is another reading service. It was nice to see some of the other volunteers from that project here!

What is the best thing about being involved with Hear the Bill? How do you envision its future?

The best thing to me in being involved in this, is being able to actually “see” what these pieces of legislation really say. I have to admit, normally, I probably wouldn’t go looking for this information, but presented in the format that it is here, I would probably at least take a listen, if I wasn’t involved with it. Plus being involved with reading services, this is a great way for the sight-impaired to have access to this information. I also have enjoyed meeting all of the others that have volunteered their time, and listening to their files. There are a lot of talented people out there and everyone has given so much by doing this, and this is not easy stuff to read.

I really hope that in the future HTB will provide more audio for other things related to legislation for everyone to hear. It will benefit all of us! This has been a lot of fun and I am truly glad to have been a part of this.
